"Hailing from Qingdao, Shandong Province, the famous harbor city, Wanda Group has risen to become a business titan in China. Taking the ambitious corporate spirit and the temperament of the location, designers came up with the idea of “leaping fish rides the wave” to salute Wanda’s great success in the market.
The square and upright building presents a rigid impression, to which designers adopted a comprehensively flexible design approach. ‘Leaping fish’ refers to the whale which represents Wanda perfectly with its stance at the top of the ocean food pyramid. Designers abstracted elements from this concept, which included gigantism, completeness, and fluidity. With smart handling of proportions and building volumes, designers successfully achieved a façade which represented a vigorous leaping fish. As for the texture, designers selected corrugated aluminum sheets and decorated them with pierced golden belts to create the image of undulating waves. With details at different levels carefully taken care of, the whole design of the façade is logically sound and infused with the aesthetics of an ever-changing ocean.
